About Aikido of Central New York
In a quiet dojo tucked away in Central New York, the echoes of an ancient art form still flow through every movement. This is Aikido of CNY—a place where the centuries-old spirit of the Samurai meets the compassion and grace of the modern martial artist.
A Living Legacy of the Samurai
Aikido’s roots stretch deep into Japan’s warrior past, when the Samurai honed their skills not only to survive in battle, but to protect their people with honor and discipline. Their mastery lay in using an opponent’s force against them—redirecting attacks with skill instead of brute strength. In the hands of a Samurai, this art was deadly; in the heart of a modern Aikidoist, it becomes a path to peace—disarming without harm, defeating without destroying.
The Master of Masters
At the heart of our dojo is Jonathan Reid Shihan, a 6th Dan Aikido master whose training lineage is a living bridge to Aikido’s founder, Morihei Ueshiba (O-Sensei). Reid Shihan’s journey has placed him under the direct guidance of O-Sensei’s own closest students—legends such as Yoshimitsu Yamada, Seiichi Sugano, Kazuo Chiba, and Mitsunari Kanai. These were not merely instructors, but the keepers of a tradition, entrusted with carrying Aikido to the world.
Reid Shihan now carries that responsibility here in Central New York, personally guiding each student’s progress. His teaching is as much about developing awareness, balance, and inner calm as it is about learning precise throws and pins. Every class is an invitation to experience the same powerful, flowing movements that have been passed down through generations of masters.
More Than Martial Arts
At Aikido of CNY, training is more than learning how to defend yourself—it’s about discovering the strength that comes from harmony, the focus that comes from discipline, and the confidence that comes from skill. Our students range from beginners taking their first step on the mat to seasoned practitioners deepening their understanding of the art.
The dojo is a community, a place where respect is mutual, effort is shared, and every student is encouraged to grow at their own pace. You’ll train alongside people who support you, challenge you, and inspire you to keep moving forward.
