Kenjutsu: Martial Art of Sword Fighting

by | Aug 28, 2025 | About Aikido, Sword & Weapons | 0 comments

Kenjutsu is the traditional martial art of sword fighting with an emphasis on the use of a solid blade for combat. In Aikido we practice traditional weapons forms, utilizing bokken (a wooden sword that mimics a blade.)

At Aikido of Central New York, we practice a number of very old kata to learn distance, we also practice open hand technique against the sword, and we utilize these kata as a true test of courage. The weapons training brings the practitioner into a moment where there is a much defined sense of life and death. Translated into life, this practice will allow the practitioner a higher level of alertness and focus as well as a different perspective of what’s going on in their own life.
