Meet Jonathan Reid Shihan — Master of Masters at Aikido of Central New York
In every martial art, there are skilled instructors. But there are only a few whose knowledge, experience, and dedication place them among the true masters of their craft. At Aikido of Central New York, we are proud to be led by one of them — Jonathan Reid Shihan, a teacher of teachers whose journey has been shaped by some of the most influential figures in Aikido’s history.
A Direct Line to the Founder of Aikido
Reid Shihan holds the rank of 6th Dan and carries a rare teaching lineage that connects directly to Aikido’s founder, Morihei Ueshiba (O-Sensei). He has had the privilege of training under O-Sensei’s own live-in apprentices (Uchideshi), including:
- Yoshimitsu Yamada Shihan, 8th Dan – Chief Instructor at the New York Aikikai, a pioneer in bringing Aikido to the United States.
- Seiichi Sugano Shihan, 8th Dan – Of Samurai lineage, appointed to introduce Aikido in Australia and later taught in Europe, Belgium, France, and New York.
- Kazuo Chiba Shihan, 8th Dan – Sent directly from Hombu Dojo in Tokyo to spread Aikido internationally.
- Mitsunari Kanai Shihan, 8th Dan – Master of Iaido (sword drawing) and instrumental in the growth of Aikido in North America.
His training also includes close study with other elite members of the United States Aikido Federation Technical Committee, such as Irvin Faust Shihan (7th Dan) and Yukiko Katagiri Shihan (7th Dan).
More Than Technique — A Philosophy of Growth
For Reid Shihan, Aikido is not just a martial art — it’s a lifelong path of self-improvement. His teaching emphasizes:
- Precision in movement — mastering techniques that redirect an opponent’s energy with grace and efficiency.
- Mental focus — staying calm and aware, even under pressure.
- Respect and humility — the true marks of a martial artist.
Students often remark on his ability to make complex techniques feel accessible, his patience in guiding beginners, and his deep understanding of how Aikido’s lessons apply both on and off the mat.
Why Train with Reid Shihan?
In the martial arts world, opportunities to learn directly from a Shihan — especially one with such a direct connection to Aikido’s origins — are rare. At Aikido of CNY, every student benefits from his personal instruction, ensuring that the art you learn is authentic, effective, and deeply rooted in tradition.
